Detection of early stage ovarian cancer with the Avantect Ovarian molecular test
The test, done with a blood test, can detect ovarian cancer at an early stage with a sensitivity of more than 60% (for stages I & II).
Ovarian cancer, although accounting for 1% of cancers overall, is the 5th cause of death among all cancers. This is explained by more than 50% of cases being diagnosed at an advanced (metastatic) stage. Although there are effective targeted therapies for women who are sensitive to platinum chemotherapy, the 5-year survival of patients with metastatic ovarian cancer barely approaches 30%.
This test detects epigenetic changes in 5hmC (5-hydroxymethylcytosine) and gives a signal of whether or not ovarian cancer is present.
Avantect is not a diagnostic test. In case of a positive signal, the patient should contact her gynaecologist for further tests (transvaginal ultrasound), to diagnose cancer at the earliest possible stage to cure it.
