Genetic Counselling: Free Service for All Genekor Examinees
Genekor, with a focus on the prevention and early diagnosis of genetic diseases, offers free genetic counseling to all examinees who wish, before, during and/or after genetic testing for hereditary diseases.
What is Genetic Counseling?
During genetic counseling, a qualified counselor will help you understand:
- How genetic conditions may affect you or your family.
- The chances of inheriting a genetic disease.
- The usefulness and possible outcomes of genetic testing.
When might you need genetic counseling?
- Managing your health:
- If you have symptoms of a genetic condition.
- If you have a family history of a genetic condition.
- If you have been diagnosed with cancer, neurological or cardiovascular disease.
- Managing your health and the health of your family:
- If you have been diagnosed with a genetic disease, such as cancer or a neurological or cardiovascular disease.
- Planning for pregnancy:
- If you are concerned about factors that may affect your baby.
- If there are genetic conditions in your or your partner’s family.
Goals of Genetic Counseling:
- Helps the family better understand a genetic condition.
- Develops options for managing the disease.
- Brings the individual and family in contact with medical and psychological services.
- Reduces stress associated with the condition.
Genetic Counseling takes place:
- Before genetic testing:
- To help you understand the usefulness and possible outcomes of testing.
- During testing: in case the treating physician, or the examinee requests some clarification.
- After the genetic test:
- To help you understand the results.
- To refer you to healthcare providers and/or specialist support groups.
